<notextile>

A History in Freeride

It all started on Vancouver, British Columbia’s North Shore Mountains in 1998, on a ride, the place where most good ideas happen. Eleven years later, Sombrio continues to evolve as a progressive outerwear company. But it’s the trail we’ve ridden that defines who we are today.

It was two years of R&D (circa Y2K) before our shorts were available on the market. Another two years (circa 2002) before we took a stab at something as simple as a T-shirt (or any other type of marketing push). As anticipated, our brand grew slowly and by word of mouth. As we continued to travel the globe riding and filming, we gained experience, knowledge and ideas that we immediately poured back into our growing range of products.

By 2003 we had generated our first complete catalogue. At the time it was an uphill battle—back then the style and influence of this new ‘stepchild’ to the bike industry was strong only in a few core markets. But with slow, tactical steps we entered the industry as one of its very first rider-owned, rider-designed companies.

Sombrio was the brainchild of three professional riders looking to extend their enthusiasm to riders all over the world: David Watson, Andrew Shandro and Gabe Fox (the original trio inspired Sombrio’s three pronged wave logo). Our testament then and now is to fuel, to endorse and to test our riders. Our goal has always been to have Sombrio be some of the most technically advanced and stylish gear available on the market.

Deep into our next season of designs this grass roots philosophy stands truer than ever. Year after year, our company’s influence continues to grow. As our resources increase, our ability to design and build has flourished, as does the boundlessness of our creativity and vision.

But again, it all comes back to the ride. It’s the passion to get out there and giver’ that inspires us to engineer cutting edge outerwear, stylish everyday clothing and subversive graphics. Freeride may have grown its roots here amongst the mossy boulders and ancient trees of the West Coast, but we realize it’s a culture that now fuels riders from around the world. By wearing Sombrio products you get to reap the rewards our team has accrued through years at the head of the freeride movement, an approach born deep in the burly forests of the Shore. Our only goal is to take what we’ve learned and pass it on to you through products custom tailored to get the most out of every ride.

Sombrio, clothing designed to withstand the test of terrain, talent and taste.
